United Rotary Brush Corporation’s Engineered Products are custom-manufactured components that add thorough cleaning and surface conditioning capabilities to many different processing lines. Our range of experience includes many of the largest steel processors in the U.S. and around the world.
A review of several industrial applications and recommended United Rotary Brush Engineered Products brush filaments follows. Please note: Because all processing lines vary in terms of operating temperature, acid concentration, and line speed, the recommendations for filament should only be used as a guideline and not for specification purposes.
For any specific inquiries, your United Rotary Brush Engineered Products representative can recommend filament upon review of the parameters and operating conditions of your processing line.
Surface contaminants such as dirt, oil, grease, carbon and iron fines should be reduced to less than 1mg per square foot of strip surface prior to further processing. To accomplish this for general cleaning applications, United Rotary Brush recommends low-abrasion filament with mild aggressive cleaning action.
For activating surfaces, effective cleaning and degreasing of steel strips
- .023 Mild Abrasive
- .022 320 Silicon Carbide
- .018 500 Silicon Carbide
- .026 Poly or Nylon
For removal of oil stains associated with electrolytic solutions
- .010 Poly
- .023 Poly or Nylon
For removal of light rust and oil stains (Line speeds less than 550fpm)
- .030 240 Silicon Carbide
- .022 320 Silicon Carbide
- .040 120 Silicon Carbide
Pickle Sections
To remove oxide and scale prior to pickling and prepare "black bands" for acid or alkaline baths, United Rotary Brush recommends a heavy abrasive filament with aggressive brush action. After pickling, a less aggressive filament can be used for removal of contaminants, soap film and other residuals from the pickling process.
For oxide and scale reduction (Pre-pickle)
- .055 x .110 80 Silicon Carbide (Rectangular)
- .045 x .090 80 Silicon Carbide (Rectangular)
For removal of stains and contaminates generated in pickling (Post-pickle)
- .040 120 Silicon Carbide
- .030 240 Silicon Carbide
- .035 180 Silicon Carbide
- .045 180 Silicon Carbide
Coil Coating Applications
For Coil Coating Applications, United Rotary Brush recommends a mild-abrasive filament which will effectively reduce surface contaminants and improve paint adhesion without altering the composition of the strip surface.
- .030 240 Silicon Carbide
- .045 x .090 Silicon Carbide
- .040 120 Silicon Carbide
- .055 x .110 Silicon Carbide
- Non-Abrasive Polypropylene or Nylon
Stainless Steel Lines
When used in the pickle section of a Stainless Steel processing line, abrasive Engineered Products brush components can effectively reduce scale and surface contaminants from "black band" material. Following passage through an annealing furnace, United Rotary Brush Engineered Products brush components remove oxide and gas residue while reduce strip thickness to specified gauge.
For anneal and pickle lines
- .030 240 Silicon Carbide
- .040 120 Silicon Carbide
For finishing processes in A-P lines
- .010-.017 Poly or Nylon
- .018-.026 Mild Abrasive Nylon
- .022 320 Aluminum Oxide
Galvanizing Lines
Whether Hot-Dip or Electro Galvanizing, a mild abrasive filament with some aggressive cleaning action can reduce surface contaminants effectively and impart a scratch finish for effective application of galvanizing material.
We recommend the following Engineered Products brush filaments for effective removal of surface impurities and activation of sheet surfaces:
- .030 240 Silicon Carbide
- .022 320 Silicon Carbide
- .018 500 Silicon Carbide
- .035 180 Silicon Carbide
We recommend the following Engineered Products brush filaments for Rinse Section applications
- .017 Poly
- .026 Poly or Nylon
- .022 Poly
Non-Woven Rolls
Made from randomly oriented fibrous material, United Rotary Brush Non-Woven Rolls offer producers longer wear, better porosity, and unique "self-healing" properties. Also, Non-Woven Rolls yield a higher coefficient of friction to improve finished product handling and reduce equipment downtime due to roll change over and maintenance.
We offer custom manufactured Non-Woven Rolls to fit the unique specifications of your processing line.
