Engineered Products brush filament is available in Natural Fiber, Synthetic Nylon or Polypropylene, or Wire content. Due to the chemical composition of the different filament materials, some filament varieties are better suited for certain applications than others.
Filament specifications including diameter, trim length, grit size and loading weight can affect the end result of its Engineered Products brush application. Your United Rotary Brush Engineered Products Sales Representative can help you choose the best filament for the operating conditions and application of your processing line.
Natural Fiber Filament
Tampico, Bassine, Palmetto
Best for light cleaning applications. However, modern synthetic filament demonstrates similar cleaning capabilities to Natural Fiber, with the added benefit of longer productive life.
Due to its short useful cycle, United Rotary Brush recommends converting Natural Fiber brushes to longer-lasting synthetic filament brushes, such as Non-Abrasive Nylon or Polypropylene.
Synthetic Non-Abrasive Filament
Polypropylene, Nylon
Best for general strip cleaning and rinse sections. Excellent chemical resistance in dilute acid and dilute alkali solutions, as well as better flex life and resilience in water.
A mild-abrasive material can be added for more vigorous cleaning applications.
Nylon Abrasive Filament
Aluminum Oxide, Silicon Carbide
Nylon Filament contains natural properties beneficial to industrial Engineered Products brush applications: excellent abrasion resistance, flex life, bend recovery, and "Flick Action"
When impregnated with Aluminum Oxide or Silicon Carbide grit particles, Abrasive Nylon Filament provides a continual "new edge" as the Nylon material gradually wears down.
Filament Diameter: Larger diameter filaments clean more aggressively; however they will wear faster than smaller diameter filament.
Grit Size: Larger Grit Sizes provide more aggressive cleaning action; however they also wear faster than finer grit sizes.
Grit Loading: Expressed as a percentage of weight, Grit Loading can be specified (usually either 20% or 30%) to provide a more aggressive filament.
Grit Material: Available in Aluminum Oxide or Silicon Carbide, there is no difference in performance results.
XRT Filament
Extra grit synthetic filament for aggressive brush applications
XRT is United Rotary Brush Engineered Products exclusive filament designed specially for aggressive cleaning in demanding processing applications. Fortified with thousands of abrasive granules at 30% loading, XRT Filament cleans with exceptional results in the most caustic operating conditions.
XRT maintains flex life and resilience in pH levels up to 14 and operating temperatures up to 190F. Less moisture absorption gives XRT the strength to withstand fatigue in rigorous production applications that would weaken conventional nylon brush filament.
XRT Filament 48-hour performance test
XRT Filament works harder and longer than standard abrasive synthetic filament, giving you results even after conventional Engineered Products brush rolls fail.
XRT can extend the useful cycle of your Engineered Products brush rolls up to 2-1/2 times. That means you save valuable time and money, replacing your Engineered Products brushes less often and keeping your processing line running smooth.
XRT is not for everyone
All Processing Lines require different results from their Engineered Products brush rolls. XRT Filament is made exclusively for use under caustic operating conditions, where high acid content and hot operating temperatures can damage standard nylon Engineered Products brush filament.
If you are not sure if XRT Filament is right for your application, please contact your United Rotary Brush Engineered Products Sales Representative for more information. We want to be your Total Quality Solution for strip cleaning and surface conditioning components.
